Whispers at Midnight

(1987)
(The second book in the Loveshadow Gothic Romance Mystery series)
A novel by

A mansion full of secrets.
A young woman alone.
A dangerous love.

Nothing is as it seems.
No one can be trusted.
And there is no escape from the terror...
or the passion...
of Whispers at Midnight.

Amanda Fairfax arrives in colonial Virginia to claim an unusual inheritance: Wicklow House, a strange and sprawling mansion full of shadows and secrets. The house is said to conceal a golden treasure guarded by the vengeful ghost of Jubal Wicklow himself.

But Amanda, determined to make Wicklow House the home she never had, is undaunted by ghostly tales. Far more distressing to her is the infuriating presence of handsome and bitter Ryne Sullivan. The resentment burning in his dark blue eyes is plain—he believes Amanda a schemer who tricked his mother into leaving her the mansion. Now Ryne has contrived to stay at Wicklow as an unwanted—yet temptingly desirable—guest.

Bloody omens soon appear, and chilling whispers in the night warn Amanda to leave. Does Ryne seek to frighten her away—or worse—so that he can claim the estate for his own? Or is it Amanda he wants? She feels how fiercely Ryne hungers for her, and how little she can resist his desires or her own.

In a place where terror rules and mystery cloaks each move, Amanda cannot fully trust her lover or her love. Every moment of ecstasy might be her last.
