The Heiress is Not at Home is the first in a planned series entitled ‘Misplaced Heiresses’ which is linked to Cecilia Peartree’s ‘Brighton Heirs’ series via some of the characters, but which may be read on its own.Juliet Chalcombe of Chalcombe Hall, near Lyme Regis, runs away from home after overhearing her uncle and another man as they plot to marry her off. She finds a temporary refuge with a mysterious lady she meets on the road, before seeking shelter with an old friend in the village of Charmouth. Meanwhile Juliet’s cousin Susan risks travelling alone to Sussex to ask the assistance of the man to whom Juliet was betrothed in infancy.Charles Farringdon and Lord George Marshall travel to Dorset to help with the search for Miss Chalcombe. During the process of bringing Juliet home, they uncover a plot that threatens the safety of the whole Chalcombe family. But who is behind the plot, and how may he be brought to justice? The authorities only appear to be interested in suppressing social unrest, towards the end of the ‘year without a summer’, 1816. Against this background an apparently unlikely love match is made.
