Kitty Grenville and her sister live at Heronswood, near Appledore in Kent, where Cassandra is married to the heir to a marquessate and her younger sister Kitty is unsure about what she will do with her life. At a time of crisis in the family, Kitty receives news that a Brighton property she and Cassandra unexpectedly inherited from their grandmother has been occupied by a stranger. She sets off alone to Brighton to try and resolve the situation. When she is found to be missing from Heronswood, Will Cranbrook, a neighbour whose sister Annabel has also married into the family of the marquess, sets off in pursuit.
Together they cross several counties and face unexpected perils in their quest for the truth.
