Set in The Berkshires, Massachusetts, 1890s, the stories introduce Liam Barrett, a first generation Irish American. He embodied the hopes and dreams of his family, bound for Harvard Law School. When his father unexpectedly dies, he gives up his plans and goes to work providing for his family in Adams, Massachusetts. As a policeman who abhors violence and who possesses an ability to calm agitated people, he strives to mediate disputes and keep peace in his community.

The Banshee of Adams. One summer night, Adams police officer Liam Barrett wakes to a woman’s screams in the distance. Troubled over the death of her son years before, the night-time rages of the woman known as “the Banshee” are a regular event, but this time, her agonized cries are different, more urgent. As Liam rushes to the bridge where he expects to find her, the shrieks suddenly stops. Liam finds the Banshee’s body floating in the river, setting him on a journey to find justice for her and her son.

The Cattle Raid of Adams. Liam Barrett faces a mountain of conflict. His younger brother, Kevin, rejects his authority. The neighbor’s bull has gone missing. A maid was accused of theft and fired from her job. The town seer, Sadie Monaghan, is certain Liam can set things right, but he isn’t so sure. With little more than his deep understanding of human nature and a desire for peaceful solutions, he solves each mystery in turn.
