The Man Without a Gun

"The Crescent Star" refers to a mark on the infamous Gila River Kid. That mark is the only thing known about him. No one knows that he has gone straight and runs a cattle ranch under the name Sadler Carrel. He's opposed to the railroad fences that keep cattle from water and grazing land, and risks everything he's achieved for himself by going up against the railroad.

In the title story, Jack Swift has served his sentence for horse stealing and leaves prison with a warning that it's illegal for a former convict to wear a gun. Arriving in a small cattle town in the Arizona Territory, Swift becomes a respected business owner and solid citizen. But when his young, lame friend steals a horse to run from a cruel uncle, Jack goes after him, knowing full well that the uncle does carry a gun and won't hesitate to use it . . .
