Professor Ambrose Vassell is a traveling salesman and a licensed doctor. He is also a conman and thief with his sights set on robbing the heavily guarded vault in the bank of Marthasville, Missouri.

Blaine Coyle is a government agent with the Department of Alchemy and Technological Infractions charged with the task of making sure the astonishing devices available in the modern world of 1885 aren’t abused or put into corrupt hands. While following up on a report regarding the Marthasville vault, he arrives just as the town is reeling from Professor Vassell’s bold robbery attempt.

These men are two of many who want to crack open the mysterious vault. Once the walls are breached, everyone from underworld bosses to government spies and turncoats come out to claim their prize. As the stakes get higher, it seems a miracle may be required for a lawman and a huckster to stay alive long enough to expose a conspiracy that shaped the very world in which they live.
