Lovely Garia Ivory, who recently lost her beloved father, devotes herself to caring for three younger stepbrothers abandoned by their mother, Josepha. Complications develop with the arrival of Torin, the new Lord Lindal. Ten years earlier Garia and Torin had been betrothed, but shortly thereafter Torin had run off with a chambermaid. Perhaps it's a bit unbelievable that the two never met before their aborted engagement, but, when Torin returns to Cloncavan, they meet and are immediately attracted to one another. There are problems with another suitor, and our heroine constantly worries that the shameless Josepha might return and take the boys away. Good character development and interesting plot twists make this better than average Regency fare.-- Patricia Altner, Dept. of Defense, Bolling AFB, Washington, D.C.
