Sarah Byrne can no longer look after her child, and in Victorian London, that can only mean consigning the infant to the fate of the workhouse or premature death - which amounts to the same thing.

But in Bloomsbury's fabled Foundling Hospital there does exist an alternative. Her hearing succesful, Sarah relinquishes her child, grateful that her daughter will be safe and looked after, but despairing to lose her nonetheless. She resolves to one day claim her back, no matter the odds.

The child was conceived not long after Sarah's father had died in a factory furnace accident. The handsome Dr James Halden had led her away from the scene and, tending to her with all the attention of a Gentleman, had taken advantage of her grief and seduced her.

In a society divided along social lines, a destitute Sarah cannot lay claim to the Doctor's heart, who is in any case married.

Little does she know, James Halden is as much possesssed by her as she is taken by him. Will he risk his social standing, his career, to be with her? And if he finds out about their child, will he help Sarah to reclaim her from the Foundling Hospital?

Sarah's pride, resentment and reluctance to turn to his help may mean that she never finds out. Set in the contrasts of Victorian London, The Rich Pass By is a richly detailed and epic historical romance.

Pamela Pope dominated historical romance in the 1980s, writing a number of bestsellers, including The Magnolia Siege and The Candleberry Tree.
