Many cultures have long believed that when we dream, we leave the physical plane and travel to another kind of reality. In dreams, we can cross great distances, speak to long-lost friends and relatives, receive messages from the beyond, and even speak mind to mind with other sleepers. Justin Gabriel, once the leader of a religious cult, is in prison, convicted of ordering his followers to kill. For ten years he has honed his mind and his power to control dreams; now he can influence both the minds and the bodies of his sleeping targets. Those targets are the men and women who put him away - the police, the lawyers, and those who testified against him at his trial, including the medical examiner and former cult members. Ten years ago these people cost Justin Gabriel his freedom. Now his parole hearing is fast approaching, and these forces for law and order will surely speak against Gabriel again. Ten years of being a model prisoner will be wasted, and Gabriel will rot in prison for the rest of his natural life. In his dreams, Gabriel is already free. Taking the form of a giant predatory bird, Gabriel stalks his enemies through the Dreamtime. He literally strikes fear into their hearts, causing heart attacks in some, insanity in others. The last survivor is the police detective who was instrumental in capturing him. Bill Fogarty is retired from the Philadelphia police force and settling happily into a new life with a strong woman at his side. His nightmares begin with visions of a great, dark bird, with a long ivory beak and razor-sharp talons. Soon Fogarty finds himself in a mental institution, delusional and suicidal, with the bird plaguing him night and day, awake and asleep. Untutored in the ways of the mind, Bill Fogarty must nonetheless do battle with Justin Gabriel on the plane of dreams. His only weapon will be the strength of his soul. Success means life. Failure sets a mass murderer free.
