Shahrnush Parsipur was an influential Iranian novelist, short-story writer and memoirist whose work explored women’s freedom and repression in Iranian society. Born in Tehran, she studied sociology and worked in television before establishing her literary career. She was imprisoned several times by the Iranian authorities and later lived in exile in Northern California. Her best-known works include Women Without Men, Touba and the Meaning of Night and the prison memoir Kissing the Sword. Banned in Iran, Women Without Men became an international success and was longlisted for the 2026 International Booker Prize.
