Convicted of killing a fellow ranch hand in a brawl, Hank Carter is sentenced to 15 years in Yuma Prison for manslaughter. On the eve of the completion of his sentence, Hank learns from a newly-arrived inmate that the man he was convicted of killing is not only alive but is now the owner of the ranch that they both worked on and the husband of the woman who was the reason for their brawl.

Hank meets a banker and the new school mistress on the stagecoach from Yuma to Douglas, and just hours outside Yuma saves them from a pair of stagecoach robbers.

Once he arrives in Douglas, Hank wonders if he can ever really ‘come home again,’ but the banker, impressed with his ability, hires him to be the bank security guard, and the school mistress decides that she’s personally interested in him. He still, though, has the problem of what to do about his nemesis, Bill Cooper, the man he was wrongly convicted of killing. An unlikely ally shows up and together, they come up with an audacious plan to settle scores.
