Caleb and Flora decide to spend the winter with Flora’s people in the Shoshone village near the border between Utah and Colorado. A few days into the journey, they come to a town that wasn’t there the last time they traveled this route. The town of Winfield is under the thumb of the self-appointed mayor, George Winfield, who has hired guns to enforce his rule.
When they stop in the town, they have a run-in with some of Winfield’s hired guns and arouse his suspicion of them. He sends men to abduct them, which is the absolutely wrong thing to do, because Caleb and Flora are not defenseless, and they do not like being bullied. What they’d planned to be only a brief overnight stop is extended while Caleb devises a way to teach Winfield the hazards of bullying the wrong people.
