Determined to catch the murderer, he continues on foot through the desert, where he encounters an old Apache hermit, Thundercloud, who left his tribe and lives alone in the mountains rather than on a reservation. Thundercloud offers to help Boone find his man. The two men, as different from each other as two people can be, develop a bond of friendship and understanding as together they face the hardships of the mountains, renegade outlaws, and the dangers of the Valley of the Cursed, a region that’s taboo to the Apaches, and to which the outlaw is, for reasons known only to him, is headed.
