Toby Giles is just coming to terms with being the sheriff of the all-white town of Jericho, Ohio, and earning the acceptance of its residents, when he gets word that a unit of the southern rebel army is heading their way. As a runaway slave, who would be returned to involuntary servitude, or killed on the spot, if captured by the Confederates, he has a choice, head north to freedom, or stand and fight. Jericho and nearby Ironton are undefended, and Toby realizes that freedom comes with a price; he decides to stand and fight for what has become the first place he can truly call home
