Amelia Cunningham knows that some of the women in her knitting class are not as happy as they seem in their small, self-satisfied college community of Northvale, Vermont. But when Amelia, the wife of a Northvale English professor, jokingly suggests that anonymous notes would upset the smug routine, she never expects to find one in her mailbox - or that a similar note will drive another faculty wife to suicide.
Hoping to ease her guilty conscience, Amelia tries to learn more about the victim, an eccentric woman married to a cordial department chairman.
