The author describes business intelligence as being like a flashlight in a dark room: It illuminates obstacles, but it cannot eliminate them. It shows how decision making must follow careful research and analysis, and describes the process of identifying requirements, the collection of information, and the analytical process that follows.

Various aspects of business intelligence (and counter-intelligence) are explored, including background investigations, corporate due diligence, competitor intelligence, risk analysis, business and market analysis, security surveys and open source intelligence. It is divided into four major parts: Philosophy and Methodology; Collection and Analysis; Protection of Proprietary Information; and Unique Dangers Abroad.

But this book is not just a primer on business intelligence. The illustrative stories and anecdotes take the reader deep inside the shady clandestine world of the CIA, where breaking the rules to achieve goals is commonplace and thinking outside of the box is mandatory.

The appeal for this book is actually quite broad. It includes executives and aspiring managers of both large and small companies, competitive intelligence professionals, colleges and universities that teach business and competitive intelligence courses, as well as people who are simply interested in taking a peek inside the mysterious CIA and the arcane field of intelligence.

The book has been translated and published in China, South Korea and Japan, and is used as a textbook by a number of American universities as well as the US Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

The author draws heavily on his experience as a high-ranking clandestine operations officer in the CIA, an instructor of fledgling case officers at the CIA’s legendary covert training facility known as “The Farm,” and as a pioneer in the field of business intelligence, to show how the unique methodology used by the CIA to collect, analyze and authenticate information can be adapted for the competitive private sector.

The author’s articles and interviews regarding current events and other intelligence and security related subjects have appeared in Time Magazine, USA Today, New York Times, Baltimore Sun, New York Daily News, Miami Herald, CNN, Reuters, FOX, AP, and other news agencies. He is also the author of two best selling novels on the CIA: The Case Officer and Plausible Denial.
