Roxanna has purchased a new house once owned by a famous writer whose best-selling books featured a nameless serial killer. She hopes to get inspiration to write a bestseller herself, since she lives alone and needs the money to pay her mortgage. But she only enjoys writing literary fiction, and thinks thrillers and the like are silly and trite. Nonetheless, she makes an effort to write about a murderer who is likeable despite his hidden lust for blood--but then her world is upended when she bumps into Rufus Carver, a dashing Englishman, who shows unexpected interest in her. She's soon falling for him, but something is strange about his behaviour.
