My wife died when our daughter was only five, so it was me and Hannah against the world until I returned to the pack I’d left when we married. Working long hours in construction meant I had to leave her in day care or with sitters, and for two brokenhearted people that was not going to work. Hilda had never been one for pack life; she wanted big-city lights and all that meant, a choice we made together that I now knew was a big mistake. If only I’d been stronger, more attentive, and realized she was out of control, my daughter might still have a mother. Guilt drove me home where family supported us and helped us to be whole again, and now that Hannah is out of the house, living her own life with her mate, I can relax and live mine. What a dirty trick! I was so glad to get to go to Hannah and Glenn’s mating celebration. Not that it was an exciting place in particular, but at least it was somewhere besides our pack. New faces! And one in particular that started things happening inside me at first glance.
I didn’t know my parents’ plans for my summer until I followed them to the car after the party only to be handed my duffel and a large suitcase. “You’ve been begging for more independence,” Mom informed me, “so this is your chance. We’ll see you in the fall.” They both kissed me then drove away while I stood in the dusty drive with my luggage and no idea what the heck was going to happen.
