Zag is brought up in 1950s Cornwall by an elderly and humourless spinster, her main passion being his ruthlessly distant older brother Ziggy. When Zag and Ziggy visit Kenya to spend a few months as guests of Ziggy's friend Marsdon, they find themselves part of the colonial expatriate elite.
