Following a change of circumstance, Cassandra and her new husband are forced to live a meagre existance in Jem and Clyde's old cottage until Harry comes into good fortune quite by chance. Now the pair should have the chance to better themselves, but it doesn't quite work out that way. Heavily pregnant and alone, Cassie goes into labour at the cottage and it's touch and go whether the twins will survive. A new man appears on the scene who is described as a "rabble rouser" by Polly. But Cassie finds that her head turns towards the handsome, wilful young man, who acts as a voice for the people.
