In the seventh of theTribune Valerius and Centurion Marcellus series, Valerius Maximus has returned to his position of Proconsul of the German Territory during the reign of Claudius Caesar. Valerius convenes a meeting of the legates of the eight legions. The legates report that the state of the Roman peace in the German territory is secure, but the conference is interrupted by a startling revelation. There is trouble brewing once more in the land of the fierce Chauci tribe, and the barbarians possess a lost Roman treasure that must be captured at all costs.
Valerius and his right-hand man, Marcellus, venture on campaign against the Chauci with the Fifth Legion. Rome emerges victorious and recovers the Roman prize. He journeys to Rome along with his retinue to return the valuable artifact to Claudius Caesar.
Valerius is proclaimed a hero of Rome but at a price. Claudius's inner council is concerned with Valerius's popularity, especially since he controls eight legions, more than any other governor in the Empire. Valerius is subsequently relieved of his duties, but Claudius offers him a new assignment in the service of Rome. He is to assist General Aulus Plautius in the invasion of Britannia.
Valerius and his friends posing as traders perform a reconnaissance of the isle. They join Plautius's legions in the invasion and subsequent campaign to conquer Britannia. It is a harrowing time as the legions of Plautius engage the mighty warriors of Britannia.
From the forests of Germany to the palaces of Rome, and to the shores of Britannia, Roman history unfolds in the footsteps of Valerius Maximus.
