Nico looks at Dad. “Census still hasn’t found that chunk from the scepter yet, has he?”

Dad goes silent, an irritated expression on his face. “Freddy’s granddad is a slippery guy,” he admits. “I don’t care as much about the artifact as I do the cash he owes me for selling the rest of it, honestly. If he’s been stealing for the past seventy years, he’s probably got a lot of interesting things.”

Even I stare at him for that one. “It’s an artifact, Dad,” I point out.

“It’s a broken chunk of crystal, and clearly it’s not zapping people like the ones from the Piña Colada Island did, so who cares?” he says, shrugging. “He didn’t strike me as the type to go messing up the oceans, trust me, I would have noticed.”

“It’s still your artifact,” Nico says. “I can set up a search with Jingle, I’ve upgraded them enough that I should be able to get him on camera.”

“How’s Triton doing? Is he stuck under a million pounds?” Dad asks, instead. “I hope they have him chained up, at least. That whole octopus thing makes it a bit too easy for him to slip free.”

Nico makes a face much like the one Dad had made when he brought up the artifact. I almost think they’re deliberately getting on each others’ nerves.
