The Great Ship has barely started its voyage when a strange boy comes onboard. And a thousand years later, Quee Lee moves in next door.
The Sea and Two Cities.
An accurate if bland name worn by one spectacular habitat. The cavern was long and narrow, and it was almost entirely filled with brackish water. That was "The Sea," and while barely fivenkilometers across, its floor was a hundred kilometers beneath the tranquil emerald surface. This was a realm reserved for giants who loved to swim. Submerged ecosystems were powered through artificial vents and methane seeps, plus rains of synthetic organics. Wise cetaceans and cephalopods came from many worlds, and they occasionally rose to the surface. Entities full of desires, no doubt, but Holyss didn't care about their motivations. What he relished was the sight of those vast bodies holding themselves still in the water, odd eyes riding above the surface, and sometimes those eyes would watch the human as he sat on his little balcony, enjoying the day's false sun or the night's projected moons.
Robert Reed has published many, many stories. He won a Hugo Award in 2007 for his novella, "A Billion Eves." But Reed is best known for his ongoing Great Ship series.
