He gave his life to save the world. Fifteen hundred years later, a drunk sophomore gave it back with a traffic cone.
Madoc was the last battle-mage standing, and, with his final breath, he ensured the demon from the lake would sleep forever. But then somebody shipped him to upstate New York and placed him on a plinth in a college quad, where he heard every secret on campus, mostly from crying grad students.
But now he's awake! And also naked, on his knees, in front of half the academy. And very much enjoying his first energy drink.
The thing is, while modern mages are a bit... wishy-washy, Madoc is the real thing. He's the sort of archmage of which there are maybe three in all the history books. So, for… staffing reasons, Hollowmere Academy hands him the Retakes, the class of kids nobody else can teach. That he can't read is, apparently, a minor detail.
On his side, he has the history professor who gave him her cardigan to protect his modesty. A Bureau Major who turned up with a cage to put him in, and she still hasn't ruled out tasing him. And a terrifyingly powerful administrator with a typed list of rules about him, with one blank space at the bottom...
Oh, and the terrifying creature in the lake? Well, it turns out it's waking up too.
