Eli Rook finally built a real freight company. Now he has to learn how to run one when he can't be in every cockpit.

Six weeks after the Winter Line, Rook Runs has two walkers, a second pilot, money in reserve, and more work than Eli can personally handle.

That's the good news.

Then the Compact offers him something larger: a spring route-verification and mobile-infrastructure survey pushing west toward Hollow Mile.

To qualify as lead carrier, Eli needs more than Cricket and Brindle. He needs structural authority, independent safety oversight, heavy support from North Bell Freight, reliable home-base dispatch, and a plan that still works when different machines require different roads.

Spring has other ideas.

Old maps disagree with thawed ground. Historic markers point toward routes that no longer carry modern weight. Obsolete systems still answer signals they should have forgotten. And the farther Rook Runs pushes into abandoned First March infrastructure, the closer the job comes to the unresolved mystery of Jonas Rook's last journey—and the unknown machine that once helped Cricket find her way home.

But finding an answer is not the same as understanding it.

Eli's System has never rewarded him for being the strongest person in the Reach. It rewards what he actually becomes capable of doing: managing cargo, coordinating crews, operating multiple machines, understanding contracts, and taking responsibility for increasingly complicated work.

This time, progression means learning to trust people he doesn't control, manage roads he can't personally stand on, and make decisions that will affect carriers who haven't even arrived yet.

The job is getting bigger.
So is Rook Runs.
