Spurned and ridiculed by a woman he thought loved him, Ted rides away from his home. Two years of roaming leaves him empty and missing home. He stops at a cabin to buy food and grain. Grudgingly, Ted is sold a bowl of beans. But the meal is interrupted by moans of pain coming from a loft.

Fighting his way past the uncaring father’s gun, Ted climbs a ladder to the loft and finds a weakened woman lying in squalor, trying to give birth. He does what he can and eventually the baby is born. The mother dies, but her deathbed request is to beg Ted to take the tiny baby with him.

When he rides away it is with the starving infant in his strong arms. He finds help in a nearby town. Weeks later, even more determined to return home, he does so with the aid of a nippled whiskey bottle and carefully packed goat’s milk. Welcomed home, Ted decides to build a house for his son and him.

The ideal spot is where an abandoned cabin sits. But the abandoned rundown cabin is no longer abandoned. It is occupied by a beautiful woman and her seventeen-year-old brother. Kicked in the head by a mule, his mentality remains at seven years old.

Marie and Bobby live in fear that the situation they escaped from would catch up with them. But an even bigger fear is the owner of the cabin will return and evict them. Living in poverty, they depend on Marie’s skill as a seamstress for their meager existence.

But Ted doesn’t evict them. Unknowingly, he has returned home to give love another chance.
