Eliza Whitaker has dreamed of the American West since childhood, the place where her parents fell in love before tragedy took them. When she volunteers to escort two orphaned twins from England to their uncle's ranch in Colorado, she plans to deliver the children, collect her payment, and open a schoolhouse of her own. She never expects the brooding rancher to ask her to stay—or to make her want to.
Nathaniel Blackwood needs a governess for the twins, but the one he hired never arrived. When the Englishwoman who brought them proves capable and kind, he reluctantly offers her the position. He doubts she can survive frontier life, but Eliza is proving him wrong in ways that unsettle his guarded heart.
A wealthy railroad developer begins courting Eliza, promising security and a future she can build on. But when sabotage strikes the ranch and the twins are kidnapped, Eliza and Nate must fight to save them. The conspiracy they uncover reaches back further than either imagined, all the way to the accident that killed her parents. Can they trust each other enough to survive the truth?
