This is one of Edmund Snell's most intriguing thrillers. Doc Morand, an erstwhile Harley Street physician whose name has been erased from the register, and his unlovely partner-in-crime, Lefty Spiller, a crook of the old school, are on the trail of the infamous Lodz emerald necklace. They soon find that stealing the jewels will be no easy task. The partners first trace the necklace to Monte Carlo, where it is being worn by Kathi von Zimmer, the ex-film star and unscrupulous adventuress. Things become complicated when various other crooks appear on the scene with their own sights set on the prize. Doc Morand is averse to crimes of violence, a creed with which Lefty Spiller is rarely in sympathy, and the adventures of this unlikely criminal couple make for a picaresque and suspenseful romp from Europe to England.
