J. Clifton Slater presents a horror/adventure novella that will give you nightmares about giant reptiles and make you think twice about venturing into the mountains during the winter.

"Hold it up to the light," instructed Solomon. "And tell me it's manmade."
To satisfy the mountain man, Tim lifted his arm and allowed light from the roof opening to filter through the translucent plate. He could make out wavy lines in layers running through the piece.
"They appear to be growth ridges," the historian remarked. "but that would mean... "
Seeing the historical researcher lacked a prospective on size for a comparison, Solomon offered one.
"Here, use this," he suggested while pulling a snakeskin belt from around his waist. "It will give you an idea of what I was up against."
The tiny snake scales on the belt resembled the plate in shape and color. But, while one could easily fit on the tip of Tim's little finger, the other covered his entire hand.
A scale that size meant the reptile was... no, absolutely impossible. Despite Solomon Cooper's claim, serpent slayer wasn't an occupation. There had to be another explanation.
