A novel by

Bertie has tomboyish ways and champions defenceless things, like a bird with a broken wing. But her youthful exterior hides a woman's heart, which craves for love. She envies the feminine Marcia, so admired by Bill Newbury. Bertie discovers that - like the injured birds - a man, too, can be maimed by his relationships and may need nursing and care. Yet is it enough to be needed? Bertie wants to be loved - something which has always escaped her and appears likely to elude her still.
