“Kiera,” I finally found my voice again, but when she turned her suddenly hopeful gaze to me, I very nearly crashed down to my knees, “... You—you should know—never tell anyone that you turn into a white wolf.”
It was an effort to endure her look of disappointment without closing the gap between us and taking her face in between my hands, but fortunately, it didn’t take long for her expression to turn into one of bafflement.
“Why?”
“Because most of us grew up with stories about either the Cursed One herself appearing as a snowy white wolf, or any of her servants sent to do her bidding,” I said as her mossy eyes widened slightly at the revelation. “In either case we were taught to hunt such a wolf down on sight, otherwise it will kill everyone we love…”
Another beat of heavy silence. “And have you?” Kiera murmured. “Seen a white wolf, before me, I mean.”
