In 1776, Mr Henry Fortune shot himself, leaving his impoverished family under the guardianship of Marcus Grant, a complete stranger. Although the widow and her younger children accepted Marcus's presence at Fortune Hall, the two eldest Fortunes caused problems. Simon rebelled in a manner which brought him close to disaster. His sister, Caroline, found difficulty in defining her feelings for Marcus - especially when she learned of his close acquaintance with the beautiful heiress, Alicia Dawes.
