At Eleusinia, a secretive, magical school for alchemists, botanists, and oracles, knowledge is both a gift and a burden.
When Cora Lee receives a mysterious invitation to study at the institution, she sees it as her only chance to escape a childhood of deprivation and isolation. Raised by her aunt after the disappearance of her mother, Cora comes to Eleusinia seeking answers. Armed with nothing but a strange affinity for plants and her mother's botanical journal, she braves a world shrouded in mystery, deception, and dynastic politics. And worse yet, if she fails her midterms, she'll be expelled from the school.
Cora finds solace in a blossoming friendship with her fiercely loyal roommate, Evadne, and in learning that her mother was once a star student at the school, exploring the same abundant gardens and hallowed halls. Are the answers she has sought her entire life finally at hand?
And then there's Adrian Byrne, star pupil, uptight snob, and Cora's academic rival. He is her worst nightmare, and also the only person who might be able to help her learn enough to pass her midterms and convince the headmistress that she has what it takes to stay at Eleusinia. But as they spend late nights studying together, Adrian begins to reveal not only the dangerous secrets of Eleusinia that Cora has been seeking since she arrived, but also a reason to feel the sense of belonging that she has sought her whole life. Has she finally found a home, or has she been lured into a dangerous trap?
