Spooky Mo

Spooky Mo - the title a pun on "that crude Pinoy epithet men hurl ... at female friends" - is a collection of nine stories, each centered on a woman, collectively giving a distinctly Filipino treatment of the Seven Deadly Sins. Many of them employ elements of a supernatural nature: two manananggals have a spat over food consumption and their figures; a diwata queen protects a little girl from her abusive father; a mangkukulam plays a nasty prank on a neighbor who insults her cooking; the fabled reptilian progeny of a shopping mall magnate is caught red-handed (so to speak) after her last sumptuous feast. Mortal or not, the women in these tales, amidst whatever powers they may have and the frightful wrath they are capable of unleashing, are always, always portrayed with a touch of humanity.
