For Every 10 Pages You Read, Someone Will Die

(2024)
A novel by

At the start of 2024, mysterious hardback books started being posted through the doors of random homes. Whilst the contents of the books remain a mystery there was one person who stepped forward and tried to explain the manuscripts were not of this world. They screamed and ranted that those who read them would be forever cursed for as long as they had left on this broken planet. The powers within the books using those who read them as their puppets to carry out acts of evil. Her wild claims were dismissed and, days later, she was found hanging from a branch within the deepest, darkest woods.

Just as investigations into the books were opened, all copies seemingly disappeared without a trace. The detectives involved with the case believed a cult to be involved, preying on those with weak minds although this was never confirmed. Whilst the case was never solved, it was never closed either.

Soon after the appearance of the third book, a terrorist attack wiped out half a city block and took the lives of thousands of commuters - along with causing a huge power surge which rippled through the rest of the town. The man responsible, according to the diary they found in his home, was apparently tired of the cruel world he lived in. No longer wanting to be a part of it, he wanted to take as many of the “bad people” with him. A belief that, in doing so, he’d be playing his role in making the world a better place.

It’s a new day.

The news is nothing but doom and gloom. The terrorist attack in the town, people killing and robbing each other in other cities, wars breaking out overseas and broken economies across the world - it was little wonder Sue needed medication to help with her low moods. Had it not been for the little white drug, prescribed by the doctors, she knew she’d have been “just another” statistic; a broken soul found on the bedroom floor in a puddle of her own vomit with traces of undigested tablets. And on days when she felt as though the pills weren’t quite enough? She liked nothing more than to lock herself away with her Kindle device. Except…

Sue was sitting in her living room with her Kindle in her lap. The tablet should have loaded up to the correct page of her current read and yet it hadn’t. Gone was the story she’d been enjoying for the last week. In its place, a demonic image with the words emblazoned on it: For Every 10 Pages You Read, Someone Will Die. Not wanting to leave a book unfinished, Sue hit the home button but the page didn’t change. Even resetting the device didn’t bring up her old book, or return her to the main screen showcasing her extensive library. The image remained. With little option, she scrolled forward.

A NOTE ABOUT THIS BOOK:

As revealed in the synopsis above, before this book there are three books exclusive to hardback. These were only ever released via Matt Shaw’s store and will never be on Kindle. It is important to stress that you DO NOT have to have read these books to enjoy this story. Just as each of those hardback books are standalone tales, this is also its own story set within the same universe. For those who prefer a “complete” picture, there is a recap of the previous three books at the start of this title which comes with the option to skip.

Again, this is a standalone story. You do not need to have read the previous books.
