When is a shell more than a shell? When it’s offered out of love.

Arawn Beavin was never fond of Society. But after the tragic death of his sister, he withdrew from all Society becoming a virtual recluse, vowing to stay cooped up in his family’s castle for the rest of his life. If only his mother were so accommodating. As their mourning period comes to an end, his mother invites her dearest friend to the castle without his knowledge or permission. Little does Arawn know the upheaval that will come along in the form of the friend’s daughter. She is irreverent and completely disrespectful of his societal norms.

Even though Marjorie Fitzroy descends from nobility, it doesn’t mean she has enjoyed the benefits. And their return to society changed things very little. But then an invitation comes to visit a friend of her mother’s and it seems as though their situation might be changing. But her hopes and excitement are quickly dispelled. The castle is nothing like those she read about in her favorite gothic novels. Except, perhaps for the grumpy marquess that resides within. He does nothing but brood and scowl at everything she says and does. Indeed, she finds little to like about him, but plenty of difficulty in avoiding him.
When Arwan discovers his sister’s death may not have been an accident, he enlists Marjorie’s help. Together with several unexpected occupants of the castle, they set out to find the person responsible. He soon discovers that the wall he has built around his heart may not be as strong as he believed. While she tries to build a wall around her heart before the hurt she knows is coming can get through.

Not all walls are impenetrable. But when their walls are left in crumbles, will their hearts be also?
