Inter-Intek is a leading British company, with a manufacturing base in China. Three of the company’s executives have died suddenly, in apparently unconnected circumstances. One in a road traffic accident, another of a heart attack, and the third of a drug overdose. Inter-Intek’s CEO, Sir Martin Penterman, needs answers. Are these deaths simply coincidental – or something much more sinister?

John Wallace, former field active tracer with the semi-official Research and Reference Office (RRO), is hired by Inter-Intek to investigate.

Wallace discovers nothing sinister, except that Inter-Intek’s business methods are both predatory and ruthless, and he withdraws from the investigation. Then a fourth Inter-Intek executive dies, stabbed to death on an early morning run.

There can no longer be any doubt. A vendetta is being waged against Inter-Intek, by an extremely clever and psychotic killer. The Security Service (MI5) – with whom Wallace has liaised in the past – now demands Wallace’s cooperation on the grounds of national security, and he is sucked back into the case.

Soon the deadly campaign takes a new slant, involving a chemical warfare agent.
And as the number of victims inexorably grows, Wallace himself becomes a target.
Can he stay alive long enough to find the killer, and stop him?
