With the advent of Jonnie's birth, Rolph knows he will never be regent of Dragolan, and this is fine with him. He and Samada set out in their own ship to see the world, and during that journey, innocently betray Dragolan's existence to an avaricious prince in the far south in what on Earth would be Africa. Prince Karthen employs his own bevy of witches, Jungau, Nogesh, and Hepeth, and when the three gang up on Samada, turn Rolph's body into a golem-like creature and hold his soul hostage to coerce Sammi into helping the prince conquer Dragolan, the Life Weaver is forced to comply. What ensues shows that the price of hospitality can be very high, indeed.
Tam is dethroned, and though he and Kay escape the usurper, they become lost in the labyrinth of caves behind Tam Citadel. They are pursued by Karthen's soldiers, hounded by searching foreign witches, and only Sammi's helping witchcraft can see them through. Now, merely two nameless fugitives among a band of escaped slaves led by another person from Earth who was sent to Erith by some irate oriental monks, Sularin and Kay, and Rolph and Samada must once again defeat witches and betrayal to regain their rightful heritage. Lives are lost while others are begun, and in the end, perhaps only a good old Earthly game of baseball can save the day.
