When Mary Olson's husband passed away, she purchased a large home and converted it into a boarding house as a means of supporting herself. With the help of her good friend and housekeeper, Patty, she's able to meet her obligations, but there's still something missing in her life, a hole created by the absence of love.

Christopher Hoffman has important business to conduct in the town of Creede, and he needs a place to stay. He was hoping for a clean room and hot meals, which he received - but what he wasn't planning on was a landlady with haunted eyes and an indomitable spirit.
