I was made to be forgotten.

No human should know my face. I should have left their town a long time ago when my feathers first started forming to join my flock in the deep forests.

Except, I wasn’t allowed to.

Held captive and starved long after all memory of me should have faded away, I have lingered here in the darkness of this foul, old attic. I am not as I should be, my body used for too many years as a tool for humans to harvest the most precious pieces: my golden quills.

But there is hope of escape.

A new human has come to this house and his eyes hold kindness inside them. There is a softness in him I can use to my advantage. He reluctantly agrees to help me heal what his kind have broken and in doing so sows the seeds for my revenge.

I am feathers and claws.

I am monster made of bone and blood.

But when Conway looks at me, I can see the gentle creature I could have been instead. The more I grow, the stronger I become and the harder it is to hold back my hatred and anger, but he is my safety. Conway is the calm to my storm and the peace in my soul.

When I leave this place, he will forget me as he should.

The only problem is that I don’t know if my heart will survive being forgotten.

Golden is a full-length MM dark monster romance as part of the Mayhem Manuscripts Cryptids shared world collaboration.
