Imagine the joy of the birth of your son, only to lose your wife moments later. Ivan’s circumstances were tragically that. He had a newborn, no way to feed the infant and needed to bury his wife. After burying her, he wraps his son up to bring him to his friend’s wife, who had a baby a few months prior.
Laura Hunter had been more than happy to take on the care and feeding of Ivan’s baby boy. However, she didn’t expect to be a widow two years later. Ivan Jr. had been weaned and was ready to live with his father. She has sold her house, packed the wagon and prepared to make the long journey back to Pennsylvania with her three children.
Ivan didn’t expect Laura Hunter at his door. He certainly wasn’t prepared to take care of his two-year-old son. Not to mention the intruder, Fred Billings, who came into his house, only to find him later rummaging through Laura’s wagon. Ivan begs Laura to stay to help him learn what he needs to do to care for his son.
Laura agrees to stay for a day to help Ivan adjust, but she didn’t expect him not to return for a couple of days when a storm hits. After Ivan returns, he asks her to stay for two weeks and offers her train tickets to return to Pennsylvania.
After Fred Billings arrest, the sheriff and judge came to clarify one of Fred Billings statements. During their visit, the judge suggests that Ivan should marry Laura for mutual benefit to both of their families. With that seed planted, Ivan begins to consider the suggestion. Should they marry for the sake of their children? Can he provide for a family of six? And what will happen when his in-laws come to town, announcing they pledged her to another for marriage?
