Can two desperate people help each other escape danger and find the truth on the Oregon Trail?

Annabelle Martin is all alone. Both her parents died and her sister married a year ago, moved away, and promised to keep in touch. But after that first letter, she hasn’t heard a word and her own letters remain unanswered. Something must have happened to her sister. She took work as a laundry woman to earn room and board with a family in town, but the woman of the house is a cruel slave driver and she’s about at her wit’s end. If only she could join that wagon train to Oregon. But she’d have to be married and she’s got zero prospects.

Graham Walker needs to hide. Two mornings ago, he woke up beside a dead body, covered in blood with a lump on his head, and unable to remember what happened. Why would he kill a man? He wouldn’t. Would he? Then someone was coming so he ran, barely escaping whoever now chases him. Now he’s buying time until he can figure out what happened and prove himself innocent. If only he could join that wagon train and blend in, he might stand a chance. They’re looking for a single man. If he had a wife, that might throw his pursuers off his trail.

As Annabelle washes blood out of the stranger’s shirt, she wonders what in the world he did.

When he witnesses her boss strike her with a horsewhip, he intervenes. Privately he asks her if she wants to go with him. A quick wedding and they could both be out of here and on their way to Oregon.

It could be Annabelle’s opportunity for a better life. Or she could be jumping from the frying pan into the fire. The only thing she knows for certain: there’s something he’s not telling her.
