Keelie’s world had changed drastically since her father’s death six weeks earlier. With her only brother asking her to meet him out west, he makes all the arrangements for her to join a wagon train. Through excitement and fear, Keelie sells everything that won’t fit into one trunk, buys a wagon and follows the instructions. What neither of them knew, no unmarried woman could travel with this train.
Desperate and determined, Keelie incorporates the help of the wagon master and scout to help find a husband, in name only, with the intention of having the marriage annulled at the end of the journey. Considering herself lucky to find a man willing, she is thankful he seems kind and gentlemanly, at least at first. But something isn’t quite right; he has a way of making her skin crawl and is becoming possessive and jealous. Why can’t Cody be genuinely nice and friendly like that handsome scout, Justin?
Even with instant attraction to each other, there is no hope for Keelie and Justin to explore their feelings, and her new husband intends to see it stays that way. Cody determines to make Keelie his wife in every way and never let her have that annulment. "No one will embarrass me like that. After all I've done for her, no Prince Charming is going to swoop in and take her from me." He tucks his pistol into his waistband. "Just let him try."

Life on the Oregon Trail was well researched during the writing of this story, making it as realistic as possible. It is shocking to know of the devastation these pioneers faced along their journey to find a better life...1 out of 10 didn't make it...yet they forged onward.
