Grievously wounded, and moments from death, the arrival of a beautiful woman at their gate raises urgent questions for the Knights of Falador.

Who is Kara-Meir? Is she a friend, or a foe? Murderer, or saviour?

The leader of the Knights, Sir Amik, dispatches Squire Theodore to investigate, as her presence forces them to face uncomfortable truths about their past and the return of a secret that could ruin them.

For young Squire Theodore, idealistic and driven to uphold the honour of his order, it means a reckoning with his beliefs.

For the headstrong Kara-Meir herself, she must decide who to trust, for she has a sacred mission of her own to complete. And she knows she is not safe from treachery behind the strong walls of Falador.

As their lives and agendas clash, Kara and Theodore find allies in the young wizard Castimir, the alchemist Ebenezer, and the mysterious Gar’rth, who has secrets of his own that could destroy them all. Aided by a priestess of the barbarian tribes, Arisha, and the dwarf smith Doric, their skills will be tested to the limits.

Opposing them is both an implacable hunter and a growing and cunning nemesis.

In the north, under their sadistic leader Sulla, the Kinshra Knights and their goblin allies muster for war with Asgarnia. Aided by a new and terrifying supernatural ally, Sulla will stop at nothing to have his victory . . . and his revenge.

Kara’s choices will determine the fate of the kingdom of Asgarnia in a quest that will see her and her companions travel to mountain peaks, underground realms, druidic glades, and barbarian feasting halls with danger always close behind.

But above all, they must learn to trust one another in a time of war. For Kara-Meir that may be too much to ask, yet if she fails, none of them shall survive.
