She wants a new life. He wants a family. Together, it all seems so perfect. Until…
Mattie Preston hoped the mail-order bride agency had someone for her. She dismounted her horse and went into Todd’s General Store, where Jill Morgan ran the post office.
Jill grinned and handed her an envelope. “From Texas. I think you’re going from bad to worse, Mattie. What’s your uncle going to say?
“Good riddance. He doesn’t care about me. I sure hope this man is a good one.” She glanced at the envelope. “
John Carter from Lone Oak, Texas. Sounds like a nice place.”
Jill chuckled. “Not if you like more than one tree. You’re making a mistake, Mattie. You could have married Charles Whitman.”
Mattie wrinkled her nose. “You can have him. He’s older, set in his ways, and frankly, boring. I want some excitement in my life.”
Jill shook her head. “I can’t believe you’re going to Texas to a town you don’t know and a man you sure don’t know.”
“I know what I’m doing.” Mattie held the letter close to her heart. “After all, what can go wrong? I’ve read his letter, and John sounds perfect.”
