Dan Fallon has left home, risking travel in the After to head south to warmer weather.
Captured by a squad of marines and hauled into their camp as a flenser spy, Dan is saved from execution by the camp commander and released into the civilian population.
He finds a place for himself among these good people but soon realizes the camp is a powder keg of distrust and resentment. With many of the civilians suspicious of his relationship with the camp commander and most marines still suspecting him of being a spy, Dan is stuck between the two factions. Should he leave, or help these two disparate groups become one people?
Because the rift between them makes them vulnerable and across the river a raider mob watches the camp, waiting for an opportunity to come and take everything they have.
