John Ballard lives all alone in one of London's most depraved and deprived tower blocks. All he wants to do is get on with what remains of his life, undisturbed by the attention of his neighbours.
And then, one day, a little girl knocks on his door.
Begging for help, the girl insists that the people in one of the other flats are in trouble. But when he reluctantly agrees to go and take a look, Ballard is drawn into a nightmarish encounter that makes him question his understanding of reality itself.
Is this committed misanthrope and loner finally ready to acknowledge the possibility that ghosts might be real? If they're real, then why has no-one bothered to haunt Ballard? And who is the strange girl who keeps pushing him to help as many of the lost souls at Margrave Heights as he can?
