(2026)
A Story by

On Halloween night 1980, twelve-year-old Doug Kramer makes a mistake that will follow him for the rest of his life.

While trick-or-treating with his two best friends in suburban Cincinnati, Doug knocks on the door of a strange and hostile man. The man has no candy to offer. Instead, he proposes a challenge.

There are gold coins scattered throughout his backyard—valuable coins, minted in the nineteenth century. Doug can take all the coins he can carry.

There is only one catch.

He has to get past the crow.

Doug knows that the man must be lying. There is no such thing as a killer crow, and no one leaves gold coins lying around for trick-or-treaters to find.

But Doug has always had a weakness for breaking the rules.

More than forty-five years later, he still has the gold coin he took that night.

And some debts are never forgotten.

The Gold Coin and the Crow is a story of Halloween night, childhood temptation, and the dangers that wait just beyond the familiar streets of suburbia. Set in the 12 Hours of Halloween story world, this standalone supernatural tale can be read on its own.
