The Bywayman has taken another victim.
A Saturday night in January 1982.
The teenage Sharon Asher was supposed to be going on a date.
Instead, her date is murdered at a lonely gas station—and Sharon disappears into the night.
Detective Will Hayworth knows exactly what that means.
Sharon is the eighth person believed to have fallen victim to the mysterious predator stalking the back roads of southwest Ohio. The police have a description of the killer. They have a composite sketch. They even have a possible suspect.
There is only one problem.
They are looking for the wrong man.
While the investigation follows a false trail, Sharon awakens in an underground prison beneath a remote barn. Another captive is already there. And the man holding them has developed a system for keeping his secrets buried.
But Sharon isn’t willing to become just another missing-person photograph.
As the police struggle to find a killer who has spent years hiding in plain sight, Sharon begins looking for a way out.
And inside the killer’s own home, someone else is beginning to realize that something is terribly wrong.
Victim Number Eight is the fourth novel in the Deadly Byways series—a psychological crime thriller set in early-1980s Ohio, where the most dangerous man on the road may be the one no one suspects.
