She came to bring books, but she brought hope as well.

When the Great Depression forces Lily Bee Davis to leave college, she finds work at the local town library. But when the WPA launches a program to bring books to people living in Mississippi’s rural areas and bayous. Lily Bee is chosen for the job. Soon she is traveling by horseback carrying books – and a little hope – to families who might otherwise never have the chance to read them. Her travels take her to a dilapidated plantation house where she meets a little girl named Evie, whose father is a reclusive widower.

Lamar Stewart once had a promising career as a concert pianist. But after the Depression ended his career and pneumonia took his beloved wife, he returned to his childhood home in Mississippi with his young daughter Evie to manage the family estate. Depressed and unable to maintain the estate as its sharecroppers leave for jobs up north, he isolates himself from everyone. Even Evie is left mostly in the care of Maude, the family’s venerable housekeeper.

But when the attractive ‘book lady’ arrives at his door, he tries to avoid her too. But the captivating and friendly librarian becomes a bright spot in Evie’s world, and despite his best efforts, Lamar finds himself drawn to the kindhearted woman.
Can Lily Bee help Lamar come out of his self-imposed exile and find the courage to open his heart once again?
